THE ADVENTURE

Individual Piano Lessons

From joyful beginnings to advanced artistry - personalised piano learning at every level.

At The Piano Odyssey, individual piano lessons are designed to nurture every student’s unique musical journey—whether they are just starting out, returning to the instrument, or preparing for diploma-level performance. Led by Yun Zhen Khew, an internationally trained pianist and experienced educator, lessons combine strong technical foundation with deep musical expression.

Her teaching is enriched by the principles of Dalcroze Eurhythmics, helping students of all levels connect more deeply to rhythm, phrasing, and musical movement.

What You Can Expect:
Dalcroze-informed learning (where appropriate): Through rhythm, movement, solfège, and improvisation, students develop stronger inner pulse, musicality, and body awareness—especially helpful for younger students or those struggling with musical expression.

Advanced performance coaching: For higher-level students (e.g. ABRSM/Trinity Grade 8 and Diploma), lessons focus on interpretative depth, stylistic awareness, technical finesse, and exam/audition readiness.

Holistic musicianship: Lessons include theory, aural, analysis, improvisation, and even body coordination where helpful—developing not just pianists, but well-rounded musicians.

Flexible and student-centred: Whether the student’s goal is enjoyment, exams, or excellence, lessons are tailored to their individual pace, interests, and goals.

Suitable For:

Young beginners
Intermediate players building confidence and technique
Teens preparing for higher grades or diplomas
Adults returning to piano or exploring musical creativity
Advanced students pursuing exams, competitions, or music school auditions

🎵 We meet every student where they are—and help them grow beyond what they imagined possible.

THE HAPPY FEET CLUB
(Music and Movement)

Music, movement, and imagination for little ones aged 3–5.

The Happy Feet Club is a joyful music and movement class designed especially for young children, where the foundations of musicality, coordination, and creative expression are built through playful exploration.

Inspired by the internationally recognised principles of Dalcroze Eurhythmics, these classes invite children to experience music through their whole body—developing rhythm, listening, and musical sensitivity in a fun and meaningful way.

Led by Yun Zhen Khew—a musician, dancer, and educator with an Intermediate Award in Dalcroze Eurhythmics (DEIEB, Australia), and currently training toward the Certificate in Dalcroze Teaching.—The Happy Feet Club offers a nurturing and musically rich environment where young learners thrive.

What Happens in Class:

  • Movement games that develop timing, coordination, and musical response

  • Live piano improvisation that engages the body and imagination

  • Musical storytelling, props, and guided play

  • Activities that introduce rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and phrasing

  • A creative, warm, and responsive space for every child

A Beautiful Beginning

In the early years, movement is how children learn. Music experienced through the body not only supports musical development—it also builds focus, motor skills, creativity, and confidence.

The Happy Feet Club serves as a powerful and joyful precursor to instrumental learning, including piano, violin, voice, and other instruments. By internalising rhythm, pulse, and pitch through movement, children develop musical readiness long before they touch a keyboard or bow—making future music learning more intuitive, expressive, and enjoyable.

My Teaching Philosophy

“I believe that music should first be experienced before it is intellectualised. When children move, feel, and play with music, they build a deep, personal connection that lasts a lifetime. My approach—deeply influenced by Dalcroze Eurhythmics—focuses on the integration of the mind, body, and ear. I aim to create a joyful, pressure-free space where children can explore, express, and truly discover themselves through music.”

Music Theory & Aural Training

Empowering Musicians from the Inside Out

At The Piano Odyssey, music theory and aural training are taught as vital components of musical development—not as separate, academic tasks. These skills are woven into a creative, engaging learning experience that helps students understand music with both mind and body.

Lessons are designed to be interactive, exploratory, and responsive to the needs of each learner. Rather than relying solely on traditional methods, students at The Piano Odyssey experience theory and aural concepts through movement, sound, and creative expression.

✨ The Importance of Theory & Aural Skills

A solid grounding in theory and aural training helps students:

  • Understand and interpret music more deeply

  • Recognise intervals, chords, and harmonic progressions by ear

  • Strengthen inner hearing, sight-reading, and improvisation

  • Communicate musical ideas with clarity and expression

  • Build confidence for music exams (AMEB, ABRSM, Trinity, etc.)

These skills support every aspect of musical growth and become especially empowering as students progress to more advanced repertoire and performance.

🎶 Inspired by Dalcroze Principles

The Piano Odyssey incorporates Dalcroze-inspired strategies into theory and aural training sessions. The teacher, Yun Zhen Khew, holds the Intermediate Award from the Dalcroze Eurhythmics International Examination Board (DEIEB) and is currently pursuing the full Certificate in Dalcroze Teaching.

Dalcroze Education emphasises the connection between movement, rhythm, pitch, and musical structure. Drawing from this philosophy, lessons may include:

  • Movement activities to explore metre, phrasing, and form

  • Solfege singing and rhythmic games to develop pitch and pulse

  • Improvisation to enhance musical fluency and creativity

  • Kinesthetic approaches that help students embody musical concepts

These methods provide a holistic learning experience that supports not only technical skills, but also deep musical understanding and joy.

🧠 What Lessons Involve

Students may engage in:

  • Interval recognition and solfege-based singing

  • Body percussion and movement to internalise rhythm

  • Melodic and rhythmic dictation

  • Harmonic analysis connected to pieces they are learning

  • Creative tasks that link theoretical concepts to real music

  • Focused exam preparation when needed

All lessons are age-appropriate, goal-oriented, and adaptable to various learning styles.

📚 Ideal For:

  • Young beginners building a musical foundation

  • Students preparing for music theory or aural exams (Grades 1 to Diploma)

  • Learners needing extra support in school or studio-based music theory

  • Musicians who benefit from movement or multi-sensory approaches
